Writing tips for the web…

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

Whilst doing some research into best practice writing techniques for the interweb I came across several variations of this list.

Some good advice here for all writers.

1. Avoid alliteration. Always.
2. Never use a long word when a diminutive one will do.
3. If you start a thought be sure to . . .
4. Eschew ampersands & abbreviations, etc.
5. Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are unnecessary.
6. Remember to never split an infinitive.
7. Contractions aren’t necessary.
8. Foreign words and phrases are not apropos.
9. One should never generalize.
10. Don’t be redundant; don’t use more words than necessary; it’s highly superfluous.
11. Be more or less specific.
12. One-word sentences? Eliminate.
13. The passive voice is to be avoided.
14. Even if a mixed metaphor sings, it should be derailed.
15. Who needs rhetorical questions?
16. Exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement.
17. Proofread carefully to see if you words out.
18. A writer must not shift your point of view.
19. And don’t start a sentence with a conjunction. (Remember, too, a preposition is a terrible word to end a sentence with.)
20. Don’t overuse exclamation marks!!
21. Writing carefully, dangling participles must be avoided.
22. Last but not least, avoid clichés like the plague; They’re old hat; seek viable alternatives.

I agree with Seth (no surprises there…)

This has been sitting in my in-box for a couple of months. We’ve been a bit tied up with filling in RFPs and ITTs this year.

So this post seems all the more poignant. It’s certainly how we believe that smart businesses do business.

Get the relationshiop and the work right - then noone should be that bothered about a “cheaper option”

Chemistry Digital blog gets a facelift…

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

Thanks to Twigger for putting our blog into a new skin - so it looks a bit more joined up with our website.

I’m still not in the habit of posting yet. We’ve moved everything over to Word Press from Movable Type - so we’ll see whether it’s more intuitive to use.

I stopped blogging…

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

I’ve been thinking about why I stopped blogging…

- Was I bored?
- Had I said everything I wanted to say?
- Was I too busy?
- Was Movable Type less intuative to use than blogger?
- Did I just get out of the habit?
- Was it because I stopped reading my RSS feeds - so I had no inspiration?

Probably a combination of all of the above.

Anyway - I’m going to start again - Hello World!

How to demo your solutions…

Monday, August 6th, 2007

I just read this old post from Kathy Sierra and it strikes a real chord with my experiences over the years.

When we do highly polished Photoshop visuals everyone starts going into great detail about tghe font size/colour - ignoring the fact that the user journey has been ignored!

Or we present a wireframe and everyone says they are worried about the production values??

Have a read of the article - it’s all about setting / agreeing the expectation levels.

Linked-out - Facebook in…

Wednesday, July 18th, 2007

I’ve been a member of Linked in for a long, long time - I think I’ve only updated my details a couple of times and I currently have a pretty small network….

contrast with —

I joined Facebook very recently - I update my profile all the time and I’m very excited that I have over 50 “friends” already!!

In our world Facebook is becoming a b2b tool - not just social netware for teenagers.

So here’s the link that prompted this post - via Hugh at gaping void:

In case you missed these…

Friday, July 13th, 2007

I really enjoyed watching Jeff Goodby talk with David Droga about “advertising” needing a new business model.

We are not an ad agency - but we’ve been re-organising our structure every month or so about for the past 2 years - and I don’t see it coming to a stop in the near future - change is everything…

The one disturbing thing for me is that they’ve only just realised that you need “producers” - people who make stuff happen - we’ve got loads of them here!!
